It’s official: Casino Royale is this year’s most talked about movie

Casino Royale movie posterIt is Saturday, and Casino Royale has been in theaters now for a little over a day. The amount of buzz that the film has managed to generate has been unprecedented in the history of MovieSay (we started calculating film buzz early last summer). In fact, Casino Royale’s current buzz rating has broken all records, topping movies like Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, Snakes on a Plane, The Departed and Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan.

This is especially impressive considering that the movie has only been in the cinemas for such a short while. The pre-release buzz, of course, was more than for any other film so far measured, but even then the film has been able to generate increasingly more and more buzz in the past two days. It will be interesting to see how far it will go come Tuesday, which is when the buzz rating usually peaks for new films. (This is due to the fact that buzz rankings for new movies are based on the previous three days.)

To see the current buzz standings, see buzz rankings for movies now in theaters.

Pirates 2 Taking Steam Off Pirates 3?

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest movie poster

Is Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, the second installment in the pirate trilogy, affecting the buzz for next year’s Pirates of the Caribbean: At Worlds End? That is the only explanation I can give, as the buzz level of At Worlds End has slowly started to fall (currently 87dB, down almost 20dB from last week) while at the same time Dead Man’s Chest has made a somewhat surprising appearance as the second most talked about movie in theaters at the moment.

While the renewed interest in Dead Man is probably due to the last gasp before the movie leaves the majority of US theaters (and maybe also related to announcements about next year’s DVD release), it is curious how At Worlds End is also dropping in buzz. Only further monitoring will show whether the movie will continue to drop, maybe even enough to forfeit its top spot to Spider Man 3.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest is currently number 2 at the list of movies now in theaters, while Pirates of the Caribbean: At Worlds End can be found topping the most anticipated movies chart.
